Liberal Arts: Effective Learning in Higher Education J.M. Vera Introduction Liberal arts education has been questioned for years. As it has been redefined time and again as to what the significance of these subjects are to students in higher education. What exactly are liberal arts subjects? How do they differ from subjects studied in a student’s choice of major? These are but a few questions that help to uncover the basis of liberal arts. What were the intentions of the liberal arts founding fathers? Understanding the reasoning of a liberal arts education has nothing to do with the content of what is covered, but the way it is absorbed. Students studying at high level educational institutes that do not see a need to learn material such as upper division mathematics, English, critical thinking and composition, science, philosophy, or social science are robbing themselves of a divine education. This paper attempts to answer the following research questions: 1. What were the earliest developments of the liberal arts education? 2. What is the purpose that a liberal arts education serves in a two-year institution? 3. What are the main liberal arts focuses in a four-year institution? 4. Is there a correlation between liberal arts education and the major chosen? 5. What are the most conducive lessons learned from a liberal arts education? Too often college students underestimate the sole purpose of a liberal arts education. The knowledge acquired from liberal arts subjects plays a significant role in the matriculation process of education as well as assists in the preparation of life and the workforce to students after graduation.
