Unit 4 D1-The relationships between job roles functions and organisations structure An organisational structure shows the way in which the chain of command works within the organisation. I’m going to demonstrate this by using a business. I choose unilever to be my business which I’m going to overview and see how their organisation structure which is matrix helped the business to become so successful now. There are different structures but I choose unilever because it is a matrix structure and this is the most complex structure compare to others. Unilever uses matrix structure because they are a global business where they have a combination of geographical divisions with product divisions. An organizations structure separates the business into smaller groups which allows Unilever to specialize in services and products. The structure should specify how unit’s reports to other units or people, so there can be overall management and leadership. This means a structure breaks down and it brings it back together so that the mission and programs that Unilever planed can be accomplished. The good thing about a matrix structure is that it allows Unilever to be co-operation and flexibility. The reason a matrix structure is able to give this to Unilever is that the matrix model came from the recognition that companies not only have vertical chains of command but that people also work horizontally, across their functional specialisation, which allows the business to work in a faster speed. Matrix allows managers to harness the services of employees irrespective of their function, to work collaboratively on key projects. On such projects the matrix manager can pool the necessary resource in order to achieve what, from the strategic objective, is the overriding priority.
