LIBERTY UNIVERSITY evangelism vision paper A PAPER SUBMITTED TO Dr. homer massey IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE EVAN 525 LIBERTY BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY BY DAVID E. ROBERTS LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA SUNDAY, JULY 4, 2014 Table of Contents Introduction 3 New View of Evangelism 3 My Evangelism Vision 5 My Future in Ministry and Evangelism 7 Conclusion 8 Bibliography 9 Introduction Evangelism doesn’t come easy for me. I get nervous and doubt my ability to fulfill the Lord’s expectation for me. At least that is what I tell myself. Evangelist G.K. Chesterton covered the issue when he wrote “Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it’s been found difficult and not tried.” This statement is a reflection of my evangelical history, I am saddened to admit. Although I am certain of God’s calling for my life, discerning His specific mission for me is am intimidating task.
Failures of the Second Great Awakening were small. They included ones such as Christian clergymen not being able to stop the Sunday mail so people can focus on god that day. Important leaders in this movement were Charles Brandison (evangelical leader who emphasized person conversion experiences and gave intense sermons), Barton W. Stone (another very effective preacher of the awakening), and Alexander and Thomas Campbell (Alexander was a leader, Thomas was a Presbyterian minister). The main cause of educational reform was the new thought brought about by the Enlightenment Movement. This movement is essentially why the US became an independent country and with its independence and the new style of thinking, new ideas like a desire to institute mandatory public education came about.
He also took a stand on clergy not elders being the only one to lay hands on in ordaining other men into the ministry. Johnson also stood to have the Lord’s Supper served every week other than quarterly as previously practiced by the congregation. Johnson felt so strongly about these issues that he would not back down and as reported by Legendre his last Sunday he “overcome by anger and frustration and voices several injudicious remarks, including ‘pronouncing the church a corrupt
Walsh calls this Christian+university=A bit of both. Students rethink their faith and begin to modify their beliefs. Walsh finds this concept dangerous though, because he feels when it comes to studying the impact of god can be lost in translation. Walsh believes this approach could be the first step to the third possibility which is, Christian+ university= Non-Christian. The
There are people who live in a secular world, worlds that is non-religious, but who identify, in their hearts, with Christianity. They are a breed of people who are challenging the Church to become ecumenical in its thinking and if the Church will not get out into the community to help others this group will be found doing the work of the ‘Church’. Pastoral Carers and/or Ministers have challenging roles that must include these Christians who will most likely never come into their Churches. The inclusion of these people will exemplify the most powerful form of love that could ever exist, a love that is unconditional and a love that does not come with wrong motives. The traditions of man must give way to this new generation of worshippers, worshippers who are not frequenting the Church but are in the communities helping, reading ‘spiritual’ books to help them learn about being great people, and having a relationship with God.
“Making disciples” has been reinterpreted these days to mean “make converts.” I do not believe any Christian is called to merely make converts. I especially do not believe that chaplains are called to proselytize within their unit or Area of Operations (AO). In fact, to proselytize is diametrically opposed to the role of chaplain and the job description—it will get a chaplain removed from post, as I think it should. Let me explain the
Task A In the article “Bill Nye Says Nay: ‘Science Guy’ Opposes Teaching of Creationism” the author is making an argument against the teaching of creationism in addition to evolution in public school science classes. The author identifies himself as a former public school student who has respect for other’s religious belief, but feels that they have no place in government funded schools. The author of this article, Noah Fitzgerel, is an intern for the group Americans United, an organization who is dedicated to the separation of church and state. The author refers to the teaching of creationism as “proselytizing young people” because it is based on “biblical literism” which he views as evangelism. He believes that teaching creationism is
It is a debate that continues to divide the nation as religious groups argue with secular groups. The Christian dimension however of the Gettysburg Address is clear. Not only does Lincoln call the nation, “under God,” but the speech itself refers to a very specific theological concept. This idea is conveyed in the notion that in “death there is new life.” Lincoln states, “those who gave their lives so that this nation might live…the dead have not died in vain; that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom,” Death brings new birth. The achievements of those who fought are like a mid-wife who brings forth new life.
Maurice Orlando Anderson Reflection Paper 2 THEO 104 38B JULY 2, 2013 Introduction: As I sit back and think about what topics to write about I realize while taking this course I have learned a lot of things about my Christian faith and certain principles that I would like to address. The two topics I would like to address would be Temptation, Teaching/Instruction. I will try my best to sum up these two topics to the best of my ability. I have been tempted to do many things throughout my life hanging with the wrong people but by the grace of God He pulled me through all my trials and tribulations. Section One- Temptation Theological Definition: Our Lord was in this way tempted in the wilderness.
Reflection Paper Theo 104 Liberty University April 14, 2014 I. Introduction The two topics that I would like to discuss in this reflection paper stood out to me in a profound way. First the Eternality of Christ and the second being the Fall of Man. The overwhelming amount of history that I learned in the past four weeks of this Theology class will stay with me and will affect my everyday decisions for the rest of my life. My overall understanding of my topics as well as many others truly stunned me at how uneducated I was in this area.
