Crack for America Banksy's piece, "Let Them Eat Crack" is commenting on the apathy of Wall Street to the plight of ordinary Americans. He is blaming the bankers and stockbrokers for creating the financial crisis of late 2008 as well as making it worse by running away with any money they had. This piece actually has two audiences, the direct audience, the people on Wall Street, and the indirect audience, the general public. The effect that this mural has on the audience depends on who is viewing the piece. By use of details, symbols, disruption of space, and adapting a famous quote, Banksy is able to convey his point that Wall Street does not care about normal people in America and were the cause of the crisis. Banksy is a world famous graffiti artist from Bristol, England. Along with being the most famous street artist alive, he is also one of the most secretive. He is thought to be 34-year-old Robin Gunningham but that has neither been confirmed nor denied by Banksy or his representatives. (Joseph) Nothing has been proven, which adds to the mystery of his persona. His works highly political and are directed at a certain audience. However, his intended audience is not the only one who sees his work. His secondary audience is usually the general public who may have a different opinion about the work because it is not targeting them. His previous works of art suggest an anti-war, anti-capitalist stance and this mural follows that theme very well. His ironic view of capitalism is shown in this quote Shah 2 from his book Wall and Piece, "We can't do anything to change the world until capitalism crumbles. In the meantime we should all go shopping to console ourselves." Banksy supports those who are looked down upon by the rich and is a critic of today’s greedy society.
