A black stripe is seen from its nose to midway of its back. Its belly, throat, and chest are cream in colour. As a nocturnal, its large eyes help to see at night, and its ears swivel to help locate prey in the dark. Besides, it has five digits on each foot and each having a claw, except for the opposable toe on the hindfeet. Also on the hindfeet, the second and third digits are partially syndactylous
Endangered Species: Cheetahs The Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) in many ways is peculiar among the many cat species. In both looks and mobility, it resembles a large muscular greyhound. Its streamlined body is carried on long, thin but powerful legs. Its paws to, are almost dog-like. Narrow and hard padded, the paws hold only slightly retractable claws.
The cheetah, also known as Acinonyx jubatus in the scientific world, is one of the most speedy, agile, and fiesty animals on land. It is the oldest feline out of the thirty seven different species of cats, originating over four million years ago. With the start of the last Ice Age, approximately 10,000 years ago, all the cheetah in North America, Europe, and most of those in Asia and Africa perished. Fossils have been discovered in what is now Nevada, Wyoming, and Texas. From those that did survive this epic Ice Age, and from evolution of closely related animals, descended the cheetah that we recognize today.
Amur Leopards live in mountains or temperate forests, located in the Russian Far East. Furthermore, the biome that this leopard thrives in is the Taiga Biome. The Korean Leopard, an alternate name for the Amur Leopard, is able to live in this freezing biome is because, according to, The Cat That Stalks Alone: An Endangered Solitary Hunter, "The hairs of its summer pelt are 2.5cm long but in winter they are replaced by 7cm long ones." The 7cm long fur, is able to provide the leopard with warmth throughout this cold climate. Moreover, the Amur Leopard has longer legs than normal leopards, these long legs helps the leopard walk in and through snow easily.
