Today’s Role of Leisure Activities I remembered one time my best friend, Matthew, came to me and told me that his soccer team had beaten the opponent in a tournament. “My father gave me a nice long pass and I scored… We won!” he said, “Dad is right. Hardworking and practice pay off. We know each other better after we have played on the same team.” Leisure activities are not only activities people doing in their free time, but they also benefit their participants in many ways. Competitions arising from leisure activities, which are very common nowadays, can help participants improve both their physical and mental strength. Lisa Wilson Strick, the writer of Woman’s Day, wrote the article “So What’s So Bad about Being So-So?” in 1984. She tried to tell readers that at the time, people started to lose the fun in their hobbies and leisure activities. This situation was probably due to the increasing competition among people in participating in these activities... She illustrated that people thought they must be mastering and playing very well in leisure activities if they wanted to participate in them. Lisa further explained the two main effects of this situation. First, having a competitive mentality caused pressure to build up in participants of leisure activities, especially children. Second, people were not able to enjoy their hobbies anymore when they could not do well in them. Things changed a lot since Strick’s time. She was absolutely right in pointing out that leisure activities were becoming more competitive. We can see many “friendly competitions” occurring in different kinds of leisure activities. For instance, announcement of chess competition or 3-man basketball competition are often seen on the community notice board. No matter how friendly the competitions are, they are competitive nevertheless. There are always winners and losers. Strick stated,
