Prostitution “Prostitution is a crime-- or is it a business? Its practitioners are victims-- or are they entrepreneurs? They’re oppressed—or are they rulers of their own density?”(Sloan). Prostitution is a business that has been in practiced for a long time. This type of business is currently illegal in the United States, except in certain parts of Nevada. This multi-billion dollar business has been a big problem in the United States. Besides the moral issues surrounding prostitution, many people see how some of the people controlling the business are sometime mobsters or criminals living off some of these women. These moral issues surrounding prostitution has made it difficult to come up with legislation in order to legalize prostitution.…show more content…
Prostitution is illegal just like some other drugs; this causes the states and the United States to not have any control over them. Groups believe that if prostitution were legalized, it would make it a legitimate form of commerce (Silbert). According to Bilefsky, a Wall Street Journal reporter, the legalization “…also has brought nearly $800,000 in tax revenue to the city [Antwerp, Belgium].” All the money that other cities are earning can certainly help us in the debt that we have here in California. In some places worldwide, the annual profit is about $10.5 billion in income due to prostitution (Leuchtag). These cities and states are really taking advantage of this money; they can make good use of it, imagine what it can do for California or other places. The states that have not legalized it yet are the ones losing because prostitution is fast and easy money, “the annual prostitution tax of about $3,100…” in certain brothels (Bilefsky). “In the Netherlands… about 20,000 prostitutes pay taxes, according to the Prostitution Information Center in Amsterdam” (Bilefsky). These are a lot of prostitutes that pay taxes; now just imagine how much money that goes to the states who tax them. In most brothels politicians say that “in a typical thirty- day period it nets its investors $88,000” (Leuchtag). Now in many parts of the world, it is becoming a big business due to the fact that it is so easy. The City Council in Toronto will really try to legalize prostitution so “…they can tax the income of prostitutes” (Weinreb). This shows that some politicians realized that prostitution is really hard to control and know the money involved so they are trying to legalize it to profit from
