Legalization of Marijuana 1) Name of the Topic Legalization of Marijuana. 2) Summary of the Controversy Surrounding the Topic In the United States marijuana is illegal for many reasons, but are these reasons really spot on? I do agree that it can be abused but it can also be contained. Although the United States government says that marijuana is an evil, heath killing, gateway drug that is taking down our society, if people were to know the truth about the lies that started the drug wars, the heath benefits of marijuana, the costs associated with the extermination of this innocent weed, and the diverse uses of marijuana's cousin, hemp, they would put an end to this so called war on drugs and help many people in pain and in need. 3) Summary of the Republican Party’s Position on the Topic On the discussion of legalizing marijuana there are many different opinions on what should happen. The republicans are overall the party who is in favor to legalize marijuana. There are two major reasons that they want to legalize marijuana. One reason is the tax revenue and the law enforcement savings. Between savings on the enforcement of current laws, income tax, and a one dollar per gram excise tax the country could reduce the deficit by $557 Billion per year by legalizing marijuana. The other reason is they think that is going to be legalized anyway so why delay the inevitable. 4) Summary of the Democrats on the Topic On the other hand, the democrats are in favor of making marijuana legal for medical use, but not making marijuana legal fully. An example showing how the democrats feel is this: Senator Boxer from California does not support making marijuana fully legal because she shares the concerns of police chiefs, sheriffs and other law enforcement officials that this decision could lead to an increase in crime, vehicle accidents and higher costs for local law
