Marijuana Legalization The legalization of marijuana has been a topic of heated discussion and debate over the several decades. The government apparently believes that making it illegal will stop it use and make a better society, but there are many factors that contrdict that theory. We will discuss a few major ones. There are many medicinal uses of marijuana, it is also a good replacement for some perscription drugs. The legalization of marijuana would greatly help the United States ecomony and quite possible help to erase our national debt. The legalization of marijuana would lower crime rates and give law enforcment the oppotunity to spend its money on harsher and more serious crimes. Now that you have read of a few reason to legalize marijuana, lets look at them more closely. Marijuana's medicinal uses are numerous. It is used to treat nausea and vomiting in cancer patients in chemotherapy, to stimulate weight gain in anorexic patients. People who suffer from neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis and Tourette's Syndrome experience less muscle spasms or tics with the use of marijuana. It is safer than many prescription drug used to treat these and other conditions as well as chronic pain. In June of 2005 a request was sent to the FDA regarding drug related death to compare marijuana to 17 FDA approved drugs including; Compazine (used to treat nausea and vomiting), Zanaflex ( a muscle relaxer), many popular anti-psychotics, Ritalin, Adderail, and Viagra. The results were staggering. Between January 1997 and June of 2005 1,178 people died every year from the FDA approved druges, 0 died from marijuana. Those deaths could have been avoided if the use of marijuana to treat the same ailments was legal. The economy of the United States is in a state of total decline, marijuan legalization would perhaps turn it around and significantly erase our national
