Sam Jordan 10/25/11 Take a stand essay To this very day, millions of people use marijuana, even though the U.S. Government spends billions of tax payers’ dollars on its criminalization. Instead of using that much money on trying to prevent people from buying or selling it, the government needs to legalize it. If medical marijuana was legalized, it would take away the billions of dollars we use against it, and would also be billions of dollars’ worth of profit. Medical marijuana is already legal in sixteen states, and is said to be voted in to many more with time. (“Procon”) Thousands of people’s lives have been destroyed, because they chose to take part in a very harmless activity. (“Legalize”) Many of those people were good people, who were either by themselves or with friends at their home, not harming anybody else’s lives when they were “caught”. Also, it has been proven that marijuana is one of the world’s least harmful drugs. ("NIDA”) Unlike cigarettes, you cannot become addicted, or physically dependent on marijuana. Cannabis has been proven to cure many things, such as depression, migraines, multiple sclerosis and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (“Ranker”) There has been no recorded death of the “overdose” of marijuana use, anywhere. Not one, but every year, at least 400,000 people in America die from tobacco related products, and at least 100,000 people die from alcohol related products. (“Legalize”) You’ll find many cancer patients who ingest marijuana. Many people think that it is for the pain, but it actually does help. The THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), marijuana’s main ingredient, it slows down the spread of cancer cells in a person’s body. It also has the ability to shrink tumors up to 50%. So as you can see, marijuana can do some much good, but our government still feels it is too “dangerous” to be legalized. I disagree, along with millions of other
