The company also markets natural gas to customers in Virginia and Maryland through its Energy coverage area. The company was formed in 1983 due to the merger between Prince William Electric and Tri-County Electric. Dominion is one of the nation's largest producers and transporters of energy, with 28,200 megawatts of generation, 11,000 miles of natural gas and storage pipelines and 6,300 miles of electric transmission lines that provide coverage to 15 states. The Smithsonian is developing a National Air and Space Museum adjacent to Dulles International Airport. The museum was to be open to the public in December 2003 this coincided with the Wright brothers' first powered flight. The museum was composed of a main building and a separate parking owned by the government. Over half of the entire site is located within Dominion Power's service territory. Ninety Five percent of the main building is in Northern Virginia Electric Company service territory and it is agreed that over ninety five percent of the buildings electric service load will be serviced from within Northern Virginia Electric Company service territory. In September 2001, Northern Virginia Electric Company filed a petition for declaratory judgment with the Commission, seeking a declaration that the Annex is within its certificated service territory and that, therefore, it possesses the exclusive right under the Utility Facilities Act, Code 56-265.1 to provide electric power service to the Annex.
