The nurse should reflect a high degree of professionalism to patients, the public, and other professionals. Teamwork is a major characteristic of professional nursing. Many times nurses will need assistance helping their patients, and people will be more apt to lend a helping hand if you yourself go out of your way to help others. This not only helps your coworkers but in the long run provides faster more efficient care for the patients. Teamwork may be one of the most important professional characteristics in healthcare.
1. Introduction Significance of effective clinical teaching, some strategies to motivate staff nurses in conducting quality clinical teaching, and the ways to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies would be discussed in the paper so as to improve the quality of clinical teaching from the perspective of a ward manager. Significance of Effective Clinical Teaching Effective clinical learning is the core of nursing education. The quality of clinical teaching can greatly affect the students’ competency, their personal development and either facilitates or hinders the students’ decision on whether to regard nurses as their lifelong career. Clinical placement can function as a gap between theory and practice in basic nurse education (McKenna, n.d.).
The question is what role do nurses play when it comes to medication safety? Nurses play many different roles in the world of medicine; however the most important role is to assure that patients are receiving their medication safely. One of the recommendations to reduce medication errors and harm is to use the “Five rights: the right patient, the right drug, the right dose, the right route, and the right time” (Choo, Hutchinson & Bucknall, 2010, p.854). Verifying the patient’s identity ensures that the correct patient is receiving the medication, confirming that the medication written on the order is the same medication being prepared, ensures the right drug, dose and route is given. Some medications must be given at specific time, so it imperative to provide the medication to the patient at the correct time.
Nurses can also build partnerships with doctors and collaborate with health care workers, to help improve the health care system in the United States. The IOM sees the nurse as a great leader, but they are not being used to their full potential due to challenges like policy regulation, high turnover of nurses, the aging workforce and the difficulty to find a job coming out of school. The ANA in a press release, agreed with the IOM report and acknowledged the need for nurses to step up and meet the challenges of the changing and advancements in the health care system, (McNamara, 2010). IOM Recommendations The Institute of Medicine report recommended that leaders in nursing should work together to help improve the number of nurses with a BSN degrees from 50 percent to 80 percent by the year 2020.
With this knowledge I plan to work toward a more cost effective and delivery system with healthcare provided to the patient population. In building a stronger healthcare system it will not only be profitable, but will also provide better care to all the patient population. As a registered nurse (RN), I have learned that I need to stay flexible and be able to adjust and adapt to the constant change that comes along in my profession. Also as an RN, I look at the healthcare profession as a revolving door, which constantly spins out new concepts, methods, and approaches. I think this will help prepare me for a management position in my field because it is imperative for a manager in this profession to have the ability to adapt, adjust and welcome new ideas and concepts directed to him or her.
If any changes need be made to better the care that patients receive it should done by enforcing more supervision. There should be more supervision to assure that proper care is being given by all nursing staff and not half done. We should, as healthcare professionals, at all times provide the best care as we possibly can. One way to stay atop of this is by envisioning the patient as our own grandmother, sister, cousin, aunt or any other family member. Total Care Nursing is or can be very stressful on the patient and their family members as well as the nurse.
Why I Chose Nursing Being a nurse is a very influential and rewarding profession. Nurses care for people through illness, injury, pain, loss, dying, grieving, birth, growth, aging and health. They not only care for people through illness, but they also promote health, prevent diseases and educate the public. We all know that nursing is a field that is concerned with helping people, yet I believe that in becoming a nurse, a person needs more than that desire to succeed. It is essential for a nurse to be open, strong, determined, thoughtful and caring.
There are two major benefits of effective leadership that can impact the nursing profession. The first, is employee satisfaction/ nurse retention, and the second is patient satisfaction. This paper is to discuss that effective leadership can promote a satisfying and productive work environment in which staff members can positively contribute to the success of the organization, which results in impacting patient care and promoting patient satisfaction. Employee Satisfaction/Nurse Retention The inability of hospitals to retain staff nurses threatens the adequacy of healthcare delivery and this increases personnel and patient care costs. Effective leadership styles among nurse managers have been associated with staff nurse job satisfaction and is a key factor in staff nurse retention.
I note that their knowledge and experience from multiples years of nursing prepare them for position that they are now in. The staff nurse provided more direct involvement in her role on the team by educating her patients during care. The nurse educator, on the other hand, was involved with her team indirectly by educating the staff on patient care issues. The interviewees’ position on promoting quality care outcomes requires them both to be directly engaged in the plan of care for the patient’s on their respective units. Although national evidence based research effects nursing as a whole, the staff nurse believes that nursing research has greatly improved her area.
Because the values and responsibilities of nurses is shaped by history the report was based on this idea, and was developed as a historical evidence grounded modern data. History shows evidence of what nurses can achieve, like how nurses were the founders of community health practices. History also helps in arguing about major policy issues. For example if nurses are allowed to participate as leaders and valued clinicians only will better, quality and easy health access can be achieved. Nursing historians are important to give advice on policy matters, so that all the interested parties can achieve the same goal and better patient care.
