Types, Signs, Symptoms, and Intervention of Learning Disabilities What are learning disabilities? Learning disabilities are conditions that can make it difficult for children to acquire certain academic and social skills for the full realization of their potentials. They involve the brain's ability to receive, process, store, respond to and communicate information (LDA, 2014). They are not the result of poor intelligence or laziness. Such impairments affect a child's ability to concentrate and stay focused, read, write, speak, spell, compute numbers and reason. They also affect a child's memory, coordination, social skills and emotional maturity (LDA, 2014). In addition, learning disabilities can have a significant impact on one's relationship, daily activities, and eventually work and careers. Common Learning Disabilities What are some common learning disabilities? While there are many learning disabilities, the common ones are autism, attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD), dyslexia and dyspraxia. Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are both general terms used to describe a group of complex disorders due to differences in brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors (Autism Speaks, 2014). These disabilities are now known as the Triad of Impairment (Worth, 2005). Another form of ASD is Asperger Syndrome which mostly affecting boys. Asperger Syndrome is characterized by poor social interactions, obsessions, odd speech patterns, and other peculiar mannerisms (Walter, 2012). In addition, there is a fourth area of impairment which involves the sensory processing and motor skills (Worth, 2005). This impairment interferes with the way sensory information is experienced, actions are coordinated, and the use of fine motor skills.
