Learning and Cognition Mary E. Rodriguez PSY/390 July 29, 2013 Gary Burk Learning and Cognition The main focus of this paper is to examine the different concepts surrounded around learning and cognition and how the two are related. Learning is a relatively permanent change in human behavior given the process, experience of gaining knowledge, skills, and act. Learning allows changes within behavior after gaining experience through practice. Topics that will be address are the definition of learning, behaviors role on learning, a look at two different types of learning, and the relationship between learning and cognition. Learning Defined Learning can be defined in various terms, and is a well- known topic in psychology. Learning is acquiring new knowledge, modifying that knowledge, and reinforcing existing knowledge (Rodriguez, 2013). Learning is contextual and can occur from education, experience, personal development, and training. Learning can easily be described as a combination of "knowledge", "understanding", or "comprehension," that has been put together to gain complete understanding of what is being understood. Kimball's defines learning as "a relatively permanent change in behavioral potentiality that occurs as a result of reinforced practice" (Olson and Hergenhahn, 2009). Behaviors Role on Learning In psychology Gregory A. Kimble (1917–2006), defines learning as a relatively permanent change in behavioral potentiality that occurs as a result of reinforced practice (Kimble, 1961, p. 6). Kimble's definition includes 5 important concepts: (1) an observable behavior, (2) semi-permanent change in an individual's behavior, (3) change in behavior does not need to be immediate, (4) practice or experience comes after learned behavior, and (5) the aforementioned practice or experience needs to be reinforced.
