While there are many methodologies to increase the efficiency of production operations, it is often the case that there is a need to apply a combination of tools to achieve the desired objectives. The aim of this assignment is to discuss the influence of LEAN PRODUCTION, an approach to production developed in Japan. This is further emphasised by presenting a case study, where Lean tools and techniques are implemented to enhance the scheduling effectiveness. The case study shows the need to reduce costs and increase productivity in a private limited company which manufactures farm tractors. Firstly, the explanation of the job and batch production will be outlined. Secondly, how might switching from job to batch production help Powerful Tractors will be explained. Finally, just-in-time control will be highlighted. 1. Explain what is meant by (a) job production (b) batch production The case study involves Powerful Tractors, a private limited company which manufactures farm tractors. In particular, the division of focus here is dedicated to the production of farm tractors. The components involved the production are engine, gearbox, wheels and instruments. At present PT’s production is organized on job production, this type of production makes a single, unique, product from start to finish according to customer demands.They are the only one that can provide non- standard products, it allows the customers to change the design during the production.The company has increased their customer satisfaction, then a higher price has been charged. The work involved is not repetitive and as such the employees are more motivated with increased job satisfaction in the company; however, there are also disadvantages. The wages paid for their employees need to be higher to reflect staff skills and this has increased the overall final price of the product. There can
