Choose two events in Lord of the Flies which you consider to be important. Write about the significance of these events and how Golding presents them. There are many significant events in the novel Lord of the Flies, but two that are particularity monumental are the election of the leader (Ralph) and the murder of Simon by the savage boys. The novel opens with the reader understanding that the boys are marooned on a remote island and that they have no adults to supervise or direct them. Cleverly, Golding alerts the reader to the boys need for authority and direction through the character of Piggy.
In the first chapter of this book when the boys meet Ralph and the choir there are disagreements about who is leader so Ralph says ‘let’s have a vote’. This shows fairness and agreement. The other boys on the island got to choose who was leader. ‘ill give the conch to the next person to speak’ this shows that Ralph is happy to hear other opinions and uses a good way to listen to people. The conch is used throughout the book to represent order and authority.
Adrien Lemaire English, grade 10 Character analysis Ralph’s Character analysis Ralph is the main character of the novel “The Lord of the Flies” from William Golding who at first is overjoyed to be on a tropical island and free from any adult control. To express his happiness, he stands on his head, guessing the chaotic nature of things that are going to happen. By nature, he is an innocent, mild-tempered boy who assumes his role as a leader when it is thrust on him. He is a democratic leader who tries to keep the boys together on the island and even uses a conch shell to show his authority without violence. He thinks of building shelters to protect them and to start a fire for their rescue.
Tiffany Sangphet Mrs. Aaron Honors English I 25 November 2014 The Values of the Island Boys Everyone in the world has personal and social values. Characters in novels are people who have values as well. In Lord of the Flies a group of boys land on an unfamiliar and uncivilized island that has no adult supervision. They meet up with each other and work together. They all want to survive so they all try to create an organized environment.“‘We’ll have rules’ he cried excitedly.
Jack on the other hand, is a powerful, tall, strong boy. He feels envious of Ralph being elected as the leader, and starts to undermine Ralph’s leadership skills and refuses to listen to him. Although the boys respect Ralph, they see Jack as a free person of the island because of his power, and they start to follow him, also undermining Ralph’s leadership qualities. Jack’s power merely comes from his strength and confidence in front of the boys, making some of them feel intimidated and feel that they must listen to him. William Golding expresses power in many different ways, the book ‘Lord of the Flies’ shows how both power and authority cannot co-exist if one is envious of the
Democracy is appealing to the masses because it allows everyone’s voice to be heard in any situation and a solution is often reached that appeases a majority of the people. Based on this logic, most individuals argue that Ralph is the superior leader because he takes into account the other children’s opinions and makes a decision based off of the discussions. However, these individuals overlook the boys’ true situation; they are children and cannot possibly be expected to understand the severity of the situation. Therefore, their youthful nature prohibits their ability to make wise choices in a democratic society. In an environment with a lack of structured government involved in a chaotic situation, the most efficient leadership approach would be an autarch that enforces a tyrannical regime.
Theme Development in Lord of the Flies In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the boys are stranded on an island that is almost like paradise, after the pilot dies from the injuries suffered while crashing the plane on shore; unfortunately, there are no adults there to help them survive all alone. Once the boys are isolated from the outside world, all of them must depend on each to function as a society through the respect and communication needed for survival on this island. The boys being stranded on the island represent the breakdown of society because of the fact that the boys are on an island where there is no such thing as civilization. This means the boys must come together, so that there can be a discussion about how to co-operate while there are rules that a leader must come up with to be followed. When the society corrupts, laws and orders are no longer regulated to keep people civilized which can lead to survival becoming the primal instinct where the inner savagery becomes the normal.
Jack, the antagonist, is a likable character because he has the ability to sing and lead his people, but some of the dislikable part about him is that he will use whatever trick necessary in order to get what he wants. Hitler and Jack are similar; they are both bold, productive and mean that make them true and epic fighters. Without a myriad amount of boldness, people would not be making big contribution to the world. In the beginning of Lord of the Flies, all the characters decide to stick together and do everything together. After a while, Jack feels that Ralph is not a good leader and he should take over the leadership of the people on the island.
When the soldiers jumped out of the planes, they faced numerous challenges. Once the surviving men from Easy Company finally reached the ground, they came in contact with even more difficulties. Since a lot of the men did not have weapons, they had no way to defend themselves if they came into contact with the enemy. Dick Winters, for example, did not have a weapon for a very long time.
Throughout the majority of the novel it is obvious to see that Ralph is not the rightful leader, and that Jack should be the leader as he has a strong sense of control over the island but does not have the same agenda when it comes to being rescued as he does not see the importance in the fire, whereas Ralph does, “You let the fire out.” This shows Ralph to understand that to escape from the island the boys need to create a signal fire for other ships. Jack is the apparent rightful leader, but the one that shows the intelligence and is the main reason to why Ralph became chief is Piggy, as from the start he understands the severity of the situation “We may stay here till we die.” Piggy’s intelligence is shown through the
