Leadership and Management Most leadership research is conducted within public sector organizations or regular corporations in the business world. However, studies on leadership in the non-profit organizations (NPO) have been scarce even though these organizations play a vital role in society and the economy. The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of the leadership in a successful non-profit organization. More specifically, understand the leadership and management in the Word Health Organization (WHO) as the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations. (85) The primary objective of the WHO is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. Its Constitution defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The supreme decision-making body of the WHO is the World Health Assembly that is attended by representatives from all 193 Member States. As the supreme decision-making body, this sector requires people who are knowledgeable, skilled, and competent in all aspects of management and leadership in order to confront expanding responsibilities in this fast-paced demanding environment. To begin with, it is important to identify the differences in leadership and management. The relationship between these two subjects continues to prompt some debate, although the literature demonstrates the need for both. Leadership is held by some as one of management’s many functions; others maintain that leadership requires more complex skills than management and that management is only one role of leadership; still others delineate between the two (Yukl, 1989).
