Leadership and Management What is leadership? What is management? Leadership and management are two words that are considered synonymous but describe two distinct concepts. Both are needed in a successful organization. Leadership and management together will build and maintain a successful organization. Interest in leadership in the American culture increased in the early twentieth century and continues to development in context. Behavioral theories evolved to today’s transformational leadership and visionary leadership. All the theories are attempting to identify leadership traits and behaviors. Contrasting Leadership and Management A successful organization utilizes both effective leadership as well as good management. There are a variety of ways to practice both leadership and management. “Managers do things right. Leaders do the right things” (Bennis & Nanus, 1985). Leadership “Leadership is ‘organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal.’ The leader may or may not have any formal authority. Students of leadership have produced theories involving traits, situational interaction, function, behavior, power, vision and values, charisma, and intelligence among others” (Wikipedia, 2011). House and Aditya (1997) describe leadership as generally involving articulation of an organizations vision. The person in the leadership role introduces organizational change, provides inspiration, and deals with the stressful and troublesome aspects of the external environment of the organization. Management House and Aditya (1997) define management as “implementation of the leader’s vision and changes introduced by leaders, and the maintenance and administration of organizational infrastructures”. Management is “the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals” (Bateman-Snell, 2003, p. 14). Management is a process and a
