Honda: Takanobu Ito Before introducing Takanobu Ito, the Leader of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., I would like to briefly explain the framework used to conduct this analysis. The approached suggested by Gehani (2013) identifies four dimensions: (1) Governance Mechanism (Guiding Values), (2) Value of Inputs (Attitudes), (3) Process (Behaviors) and (4) Value of Outputs (Performance). Each of these dimensions take into account six factors (see Appendix 1 for a better reference of this framework). It is in the context of this framework that I ranked the leader’s ability to be innovative, and using a scale that ranges from 1 (low) to 10 (high). Therefore, the following sections explain the reasoning behind the ranking while providing further information about the specific organization that the executive is currently leading. 1. Governance Mechanism I found this control dimension extremely valuable in analyzing the innovative ability of the President and Chief Executive Officer of Honda. The 6 factors that comprise the guiding values analysis include: (1) Childhood Nurturing, (2) Educational Preparation (3) Spirituality and Ethics, (4) Leadership Style, (5) Demanding Situation, and (6) Luck. 1. Childhood Nurturing Takanobu Ito was born in August of 1953 in Tokyo, Japan. I took into consideration some of the elements of Geert Hofstede’s 5-Dimensions comparative intercultural research of the Japanese culture: Power Distance, Individualism, Masculinity/Femininity, Uncertainty Avoidance, and Long Term Orientation (see Appendix 2 for a better reference on the Japanese culture is seen through these 5-Dimension lenses). Even though Japan scores 46 on the Individualism dimension (and therefore showing many of the characteristics of a collectivist society), it is not as collectivistic as most Asian countries.
