Industrial power system management has emerged as a specialized subject in itself rather than a branch of grid management. Primarily due to concentration of its loads, generation & transmission lines within a confined geographical spread of its parent plant & process, with more focus on its reliability, power disturbances and quick revival of production process after disturbances, distribution reliability with respect to potential of capital damage and opportunity loss in production process has increased significantly. More over power system visibility, availability of all system parameters and information through a network from the remote substations to the central location or quite data warehousing for months / year (to detect deviation or statistical analysis) are becoming pre-requisite for modern day power system management. It is mandatory to identify the proper sequence of events (where a number of events occur within a few milliseconds) for a quick recovery and root cause analysis. In a steel plant the continuity of power supply becomes further critical due to reasons of its complexities and potential thereat of capital equipment damage once its water, steam and air circuit gets disturbed. Unlike utilities wherein revenue realization from the usages of energy remains at highest priority .The power system management in a steel plant hovers mostly around supplying uninterrupted power even at the cost of underutilization of generation & transmission utilities and this is guided primarily by the overall economics for opportunity loss, risk assessment, safeguarding against potential equipment damage and faster restoration in case of outages or disturbances.
