The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and most powerful particle collider, the largest and most complex experimental facility ever built, and the largest single machine in the world.[1] It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) between 1998 and 2008 in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and engineers from over 100 countries, as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories.[2] It lies in a tunnel 27 kilometres (17 mi) in circumference, as deep as 175 metres (574 ft) beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland. The 3.8-metre (12 ft) wide concrete-lined tunnel, constructed between 1983 and 1988, was formerly used to house the Large Electron–Positron Collider.[32] It crosses the border between Switzerland and France at four points, with most of it in France. Surface buildings hold ancillary equipment such as compressors, ventilation equipment, control electronics and refrigeration plants. The LHC was Started on 10 September 2008, Since then, scientists have published more than 700 papers detailing the knowledge they have gained at the cutting edge of particle physics. Undisputedly, the most famous insight so far has been the discovery of what could be the long-sought Higgs boson. This particle is thought to arise from the fluctuation of the invisible “Higgs field” that pervades the universe, imparting mass to particles that interact with it. Without the Higgs field, our world would be a much different place. Even during the excitement of that discovery, thousands of scientists—more than 1800 of whom are based in the United States—continued the important work of analyzing the continuing flood of new data pouring out of their detectors. There is still much to learn about the new, Higgs-like particle. And there is still much more territory to cover in the search for new physics. The LHC will expand
