EDUC 302 Case Study 1 You have a student who is struggling with your synthetic approach to teaching phonics. Explain 3 alternative approaches to phonics instruction that you could use to help this student. Alternative #1: Linguistic Phonics Instruction, on page 231, is an approach that teaches unknown words by placing together sound-symbol patterns. For example, Dr. Seuss books use sound-symbol patterns and use the repetition of words that sound alike to teach new words. A good way to teach this to a child who is having problems with synthetic patterns, is to give them books, like Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss.
Factor 1 was reading comprehension, Factor 2 indicates Word Reading, and Factor 3 determined Fluency. The reason for the factors was that all three were closing related to each other with .64 correlated in Comprehension and Word Reading, .58 correlated in Comprehension and Fluency, and a .51 correlation between Word Reading and Fluency. To identify the poor readers, a sample percentile score were computed for each factor score and a reading problem was defined if the student scored below the 15th percentile in any of the factors. The procedure determined that 63 students were at risk and needed further intervention. The study also proved that reading problems in middle elementary students requires a multi step process.
Instruction: After reading the story again generate eight different approaches Raul might take to dealing with the tension that correspond to the eight strategies identified by researchers: 1) denial: Raul thinks that his current situation is not as bad as it seems, because his parents are being his parents. Going into AP English class, I knew there would much to learn and that I had much room to grow. After looking back critically over the work I had done throughout the first semester of my junior year, I realized that I have already come a long way. After looking back at the comments Mr. Murphy had written about my writings and the notes I had made to myself, I noticed that my conclusions, thesis, organization, word and verb choice needed work. In contrast, some positive aspects about my writings were good insights, citations and flow. When looking back on my old free responses the reoccurring weaknesses were my conclusions and thesis statements.
His choice to portray the experience of training, fighting and dying in war time so sensitively ensures that the text makes difficult and challenging ideas particularly accessible for KS3 pupils. The text is rich in material for study in English, Art, Citizenship, Drama, History, ICT and Music. Below is a selection of suggested activities, aimed at providing teachers with ideas for cross-curricular work in schools. Some are very short term, taking up perhaps just one lesson; others are much longer projects, offering teachers some flexibility in their planning. Language and Technology- With detailed reference to Text I and to relevant ideas from language study, explore how technology affects language use. This text is a series of text messages between Lola (L), two of her school friends (Natalie (N) and Sarah (S) and her Aunt Kate (K). All three of the texts would most likely take place in different situations as the conversations as the texts depend on how inhibited L is to share information with these people. The conversation between L and N appears to only take place because of a piece of work possibly set from school, which N appears to be stuck on. The second text between L and K is less obvious as to why it has taken place, but from what is there, the reader can see that K is older than L as she tells her that she asked the ‘girls at work 2 look after you’.
