Language and Speech Disorder in Children Elizabeth Banks PSY 372-Educational Psychology Instructor Harold Fisher August 22, 2011 Language and Speech Disorder in Children For my research topic I chose Speech and Language Disorders in Children. I thought this would be very interesting because my cousin had to have help with his speech. I also have had the privilege to work kids with (Special Needs Children) at the job where I work, so I thought by doing some more research on this would help me understand everything a little better. I want to really try and understand what they go through with this disorder. Speech and language disorders refer to problems in communication and related areas such as oral motor function. These delays and disorders range from simple sound substitutions to the inability to understand or use language or use the oral-motor mechanism for functional speech and feeding. Some causes of speech and language disorders include hearing loss, neurological disorders, brain injury, mental retardation, drug abuse, physical impairments such as cleft lip or palate, and vocal abuse or misuse (Hamaguchi, P. M. 1995). It is my goal of this research paper is to examine some causes of this disorder, characteristic of language and speech disorders, Educational Implication on language and speech disorder, ways this disorder affect children and ways speech and language disorder affects communication.
