Lebanese people using words such as “cuz” for “cousin “ or Afghan origin people using the word “bachem” for brother in English. This allows for people to convey their ethnicity and culture to others, which would not have been possible if Standard English was used due to the strict rules that govern how it is used. Furthermore although Standard English is more widely comprehended due to having an agreed standard for grammar, vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation and conventions of use at times other non-standard forms of English can convey more specific meanings. As K Burridge states “clearly Standard English is perceived to be intrinsically superior to other varieties. Yet examples are easy to find where non-standard
The context of the text is also more appealing to me: talking about the positive and good things about social media rather than scaremongering and causing dread in just the simple use of them. I also prefer the basic white background with black text rather than the colourful background because it’s a bit distracting and it doesn’t add anything to the text itself. Also the text in the leaflet seems to be comprised mainly of facts and statistics which do not appeal to me nor do they sway my current opinion of social networking as a whole. The leaflet being in leaflet form however is the biggest reason that it doesn’t appeal me. If it were in a form of a website it could perhaps be more enticing and more appealing to me, but alas it is not.
It is also stated that the language of ‘textese’ as it is called, maybe be just masking dyslexia. Dyslexia is a learning disability where people have difficulty seeing the word and its correct spelling in their head. ‘Textese’ makes it easy for dyslexic people because they don’t have to have all the letters in the word they just have to make sure the other person they are communicating with can understand them and what they are trying to say. These things are clearly the cons of ‘textese’ but in the article there are almost more pros than cons. ‘Textese’ is not as deviant as people think, they make it out to be the biggest first world problem anyone has ever seen but really its only if people are in a real rush that they use it.
Which was the complete opposite in the Massachusetts case because they learned it would be better if they got along with the natives. Although they were different the two economic systems were still successful in their own ways but also had
The writing will feel incomplete. Semicolons are fun to use because they feel better to use than with a period. Colons are less attractive because they give a sense of direction.
2.1 - When getting to know an individual, it is important to know how they like to be addressed such as some people called James likes to be called Jim but there are others who like to be called something completely different. It’s also a good start to know if they speak the same language, if there is a language barrier, there is different methods to overcome this. When the barriers are down and communication is well established, wishes and preferences of an individual are easier to identify and put into place. By using good communication skills, it makes it a bit simpler to support an individual to make informed choices about how they are cared for and supported. This will make them feel respected, valued and in control of what happens to them.
The way in which we speak has a direct correlation on the way in which people think of us. Our language is influenced by things such as the; programmes and films we watch, the music we listen to and our upbringing. We adapt the way we speak for specific purposes as we know that as a society we are stereotyped by the way we talk. For example, when speaking to a parent, I use standard English as it shows more respect in the sense that if I used colloquial language to them, they wouldn’t understand and that would stunt the conversation. Standard English is more appropriate to use as I have more formal conversations with my parents than I do with my friends, making Standard English more appropriate.
Orwell includes himself when he explains this analogy- he doesn’t go on to say anything to the effect of “and this is how you compare to that in your use of language”. Instead, he says “It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts” (Orwell 1). Without the use of pronouns, the criticisms might have been taken personally by anyone who read it and it would likely have been discredited, as people became defensive, and chances are it wouldn’t have gotten much circulation. In order to unite himself with the reader, Orwell concludes his essay with an acknowledgement of the fact that the very essay he is writing probably includes some of the mistakes he finds in the work of other writers, which contribute to the decline of the English language.
To what extent have your perceptions of belonging been influenced by the texts you have studied? Refer to your prescribed text and at least one other text of your own choosing. Belonging or feeling as though you are an important part of a whole, is an essential part of an individuals’ understanding of life. If an individual does not feel as though they belong either to a group, place or community it can lead them to feel unsatisfied with their lives. This perception of belonging has been influenced by both Peter Skrzynecki’s ‘Immigrant Chronicle’ and Shaun Tan’s graphic novel ‘The Arrival.’ Cultural identity often plays a large role in our sense of self and allowing us to feel as though we belong.
Assess the strengths and limitations of unstructured interviews for investigating the effects of streaming Unstructured interviews have advantages and disadvantages and as a qualitative method they are expressed through words and relay peoples thoughts and feelings. Unstructured interviews are interviews that don't have certain questions meaning its more free and relaxed. They give us a clear understanding of the interviewees because we use their answers to help us figure out the next set of questions, therefore becoming more appropriate and relevant. However, using unstructured interviews can also cause problems, for example, they take a long time to conduct. When looking at the advantages and disadvantages of using unstructured interviews to investigate streaming, we need to look at how this can effect the pupils.
