The two tragic characters being compared are Lady Macbeth and Madea. Lady Macbeth is the wife of Macbeth and plays a key role in the play. She causes Macbeth to commit acts of violence and to go insane. Through her role in the play Lady Macbeth becomes insane and causes Macbeth to spiral out of control leading to the death of Macbeth and the suicide of herself. Madea is the wife of Jason, who was abandoned by him and left with no one because she was exiled from her original land. Madea shows that being betrayed by Jason she needs to get back at him by killing his wife and her kids eventually becoming criminally insane. Lady Macbeth and Madea define themselves through their husbands because both commit or persuade acts of violence for personal gain eventually driving themselves insane. Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth to become King of Scotland and she wants to become the Queen of Scotland. When she hears of the witches prophecy that Macbeth will become King she is power hungry. She says “ Alack, I am afraid they have awaked, and ‘tis not done. The attempt and not the deed confounds us. Hark! I laid their daggers ready; He could not miss ‘em. Had he not resembled My father as he slept, I had done’t” (page 23). Lady Macbeth is persuading Macbeth to kill duncan and he does what she says. Macbeth proceeds to commit the murder and come back into the room with the bloody dagger. She helps him calm down and puts the dagger back to frame the servants. This shows her being defined through him because she wants to become the new Queen of Scotland, she persuades him to kill Duncan, and drugs the servants to frame them. Madea tricks Jason by lying to him saying that she is mentally back to normal and that its not necessary for her children to be exiled, and that she is actually happy for Jason.
