Courage 1 Unit 3: Lady Courageous Courage 2 Courage is the ability and willingness to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. Sophia Lenox is a very courageous woman. She is also my best friend of a lifetime so far. Although lots of people have been through worse, she is very courageous because she is a victim of sexual assault and she has overcome her trauma. She was sexually assaulted at the age of 22. She was going through a rough patch in her life and was living with her boyfriend and his uncle. Her boyfriend left the house for work one night leaving her home alone, which was the usual scenario. His uncle, whom she had never had problems with previously, came home from work later that night after Sophia was asleep. He made his way into the room she was sleeping in and without turning on the light, he sat on the edge of the bed and started touching her. Awakening her, she told him to get out. He refused and they got into an altercation where he broke her cell phone into pieces. He forced her into the bathroom in the hallway, where he forced himself on her, over and over again. After having his way with her, he grabbed her by the hair and pulled her into the backyard, surrounded by nothing but woods, for as far as the eye could see. He tied her to the porch steps and proceeded to brutally beat her with an aluminum baseball bat. After he had beaten her into oblivion and untied her, he stole her drivers license and threatened to hunt down and kill her 2 children if she ever told ANYONE at all. Despite everything that happened that night, Sophia managed to gather herself enough to walk. She must have walked 17 miles before reaching her boyfriend's mother's house. She managed to get his mom to drive her back to her home town, without telling her what was going on. Sophia, scared for the life of her children, never told authorities.
