Have you ever: forgotten the name of someone you just met, been unable to put a name to the face of a neighbour you saw at the movies, failed to get the one item you actually went to the market to buy, or forgotten to take the 8pm dose of medication? Don’t feel bad – you’re not alone. Many teenagers worry about memory loss, but it is actually lack of concentration and listening skills. Lack of concentration is said to be one of the major causes of failure in studies these days. There are many factors which may distract concentration amongst teenagers, some of them are: 1. Fatigue: most of today’s teenagers prefer a different kind of lifestyle which includes partying with friends and involving other activities which hampers adequate sleep. Sleep deprivation is probably the most common cause for the inability to concentrate on one topic for very long. Many studies have shown that students are not getting enough sleep and sleep deprivation has serious physical, emotional and cognitive effects. 2. Stress: it is considered as another cause for the inability to concentrate. Though, high school is an exciting time, it includes a lot of stress for teenagers as well. It is most difficult to recall or learn something when you are feeling stressed, anxious, tired or angry, which are symptoms of over working your mind. The human body is built to protect itself, and this could be a possible cause of lack of concentration as your mind is handling more than enough already. For example, when students are given a project, they put it off for the last minute and have no time management. This leads to panic. In order to deal with this, make an effort to give yourself a break. You will find that you are able to remember more easily when your mind is alert and well-rested. This allows you to pay more attention and commit more to memory. 3. Boredom: students usually get bored
