For several years, the Labrador Retriever has held the top spot as the most popular dog in the United States. If you have ever known a Labrador Retriever this should not come as a surprise to you. Labrador Retrievers are an intelligent breed of dog. Labs also make great family pets and enjoy hard work. All are traits that people appreciate in a best friend. Labrador Retrievers are very intelligent. Their intelligence, diligence and enthusiasm helps make training a lab an easy task. Labs can learn basic commands and other things, such as playing fetch, at a very young age. Labs are so smart that they are often used in competitions such as hunting, agility and obedience. Labrador Retrievers are great family pets. The lab is gentle, patient and very kind to children. Labs are also kind to other family members, friends and other pets. Every family member can bond with the lab in their own way. The lab can go on hunting trips with dad, accompany mom for nice long walks, play catch in the yard with the kids or even substitute as a pillow for a toddler. The work ethic of a lab is one to be admired. Labs are very talented animals and seem to genuinely enjoy exercising those talents. Labs originated in Newfoundland, Canada and were developed to be working dogs, helping fishermen. Today labs are used for hunting, as guide dogs and police dogs. Their keen since of smell and friendly disposition also make them ideal for search and rescue. Labrador Retrievers are very intelligent dogs. They make a wonderful addition to any active family. Labs are also talented, hard workers. Of all these wonderful attributes mentioned, having the pleasure of a knowing and loving a lab personally is what truly makes this breed
