Laboratory safety is everybody’s responsibility. In order to avoid personal injuries and injuries to fellow students or to instructors while working in this laboratory, the following rules are to be strictly enforced. A. General Safety and Security (1) Only authorized students are allowed entry to the laboratory. Visitors are only permitted if: • part of official tours • involved in classroom activities • escorted by the faculty (2) Do not touch, move, or otherwise disturb any equipment or experimental setup with which you are not directly involved. (3) Never operate equipment alone in the laboratory. Work with the company of classmates or under the supervision of faculty or designated graduate student. (4) Always wear safety glasses while operating, constructing, or maintaining equipment in the laboratory. (5) Always wear hearing protection while operating ‘loud’ equipment (i.e., air compressor, vacuum pump, or power tools). (6) Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory—horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are potentially dangerous and prohibited. (7) Unauthorized experiments are prohibited—follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. (8) Upon completion of your laboratory session: • Return all equipment to their proper locations • Verify that all equipment is offline and the apparatus and room is securely locked (9) Remain aware of operating procedures, the location of the first aid kit, eyewash station, fire extinguisher, and emergency exit. (10) Proper attire must be worn at all times during laboratory activities: • Closed toed shoes are to be worn at all times • Long hair must be tied back • Dangling jewelry, loose, or baggy clothing must be secured (11) Report any unsafe practices, conditions, and injuries immediately to faculty or the MNE
