It is quite a difficult feat to get into one Ivy League school. But all eight in the United States? Including both the top universities of Harvard and Yale? That’s simply unheard of! Well, that has been the case until just recently with a particular student, Kwasi Enin, a student at William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach, N.Y. Kwasi Enin was born in Amityville, New York to parents who are both nurses and immigrants from Ghana. This makes both he and his sister Adowa Enin, first generation Americans from Ghana. The family at first lived in Bay Shore, not too far from Amityville, 10 years ago. Then they moved to Shirley, once again still within the state of New York and continue to reside there today. He starts off his day with orchestra and after about six or seven periods later he ends with environmental science or gym. Afterwards, he attends various club meetings, track practice or rehearsal for an upcoming musical. In addition to Youth in Government Club, Enin volunteers in the radiology department of Stony Brook University Hospital and is in both the youth and bell choirs at the United Methodist Church of Bay Shore. He hopes to go into the medical field as a doctor in the future. In his Common Application essay, Enin writes about his love of music into a story about leadership, community, and bringing joy to the world by singing and dancing in a production of Guys and Dolls. It was because of this same essay that 12 colleges including all eight Ivy League universities had decided to accept him. These peers make appointments after school with the teacher whether it’s because they didn’t understand a certain topic, for better study habits, review, etc. They are also in a study group and meet every so often with them to go over material that they don’t understand or to help others with it. Those who are serious about their education, participate in class more. They do this as a means of showing that they understand the material. In every test or quiz given to them, they get mastery or above on them because they study and read over their notes every night. They encourage and empower me to renew my commitment to my education. Whenever I don’t feel motivated or just feel like giving up, I think of them and remind myself that they didn’t reach that level naturally or because they are geniuses. They reached that level because they took advantage from the beginning and practiced good study habits so the information stuck to them. And so in short, they worked hard for it and put effort into it. My short term goals academically are pretty much the same as everyone else. I wish to get mastery and above in all of my classes every marking period. The same goes for test and quiz grades. My short terms goals professionally however, are a different story.
