Secondly, functional changes that may occur with someone with dementia is that they may have had a stroke or have weakness in using limbs which would affect them using utensils such as a knife and fork for instance not having the strength to lift the fork to their mouth. Or they may have lost strength within the swallowing or chewing, this would significantly affect a person in reference to eating drinking and nutrition. This can lead to a person not being able to eat and therefore losing weight and possibly malnourished and becoming dehydrated. Thirdly, emotional changes can affect eating, drinking and nutrition in a huge way. For instance people with dementia can be affected by grief as in the most common of circumstances they are elderly and may have suffered the loss of a partner.

Malnutrition is a terrible issue that many developing countries are facing today. According to an article by Denise Mupfasoni, malnutrition can lead to parasitic infections, deficiencies in vitamins, stunting and mortality. There are many diseases that are caused from the lack of vitamins, such as anemia, rickets, osteoporosis, and autoimmune disorders. Stunting mainly is caused when children do not receive adequate nutrition and the child never grows to his of her full size and stength (Mupfasoni, Karibushi and Koukounari 3). There are many issues that can cause people to become under nourished.

Damage to the glomeruli can also cause blood and protein to be lost in the urine. Loss of this function is called glomerulonephritis, a type of kidney disease, that is a serious and potentially fatal disease, if left untreated. Glomerulonephritis is an inflammation of the glomeruli in the kidneys. Also called glomerular disease, glomerulonephritis can be either acute or chronic.

This is the overweight population stricken with Type II diabetes. Almost 90% of people living with Type II diabetes are overweight or are stricken with obesity. People who are overweight or have obesity have added pressure on their body's ability to properly use insulin, which controls their blood sugar levels and this in turn makes it more likely for them to develop diabetes. (National Diabetes Data Group, 1995).

Over Consumption vs. Under Consumption Throughout the world there have been numerous diseases that derive solely from food consumption. Various countries suffer from infection due to the lack of food, whereas other countries suffer from the over indulgence of food. In Haiti, the majority of food borne illnesses comes from the lack of consumption. According to John Eyles, Tuberculosis is the main infectious disease that is common in areas of poverty (Eyles).
Everyone is becoming unhealthier and more overweight each day by their lack of exercise and poor eating habits. Almost 65% of West Virginians do not maintain a healthy weight and one in four are considered obese. Alarmingly, 85,000 k-12 aged students are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. Being overweight and obese also puts children at risks for health problems later on in life and also may cause them to die. Approximately 40 % of children born after 2000 will have these problems due to their unhealthy lifestyles.
