Sean Callanan 10/31/12 English 130-01 I started taking Kung Fu lessons when I was ten years old and I have been doing it ever since. Kung Fu is meant for defensive actions only and it is never an offensive action. This means that we are trained to never go out looking for a fight and it is only used to protect one’s self. In the nine years that I have been studying Kung Fu I have reached my first degree black belt. Through Kung Fu I have learned control, determination, and how to perform. At my Dojo we have colored belts to symbol our rank in the class and our state of mind. At the beginning of every class we bow to our instructor(s) and other class mates. How we bow is determined by our belt color. From white belt to blue belt one bows with both of their hands to their side, to symbolize that their mind and body are separate. From blue belt to brown belt one bows with their hands touching, symbolize that their mind and body are slowly merging together. After one has reached their black belt they bow with one hand over the other, to symbolize that the mind and body are truly one. Going through this many years of training my body to be able to protect myself in dangerous situations, has taught me how to control my body. I feel that this is really important for people to know, because I feel that when I play sports I am always aware of my body so I never accidentally harm someone else. I also have obtained a very calm mind when it comes to serious information, and I can see situations before they escalate. When I started taking class I was also going to class with my brother and two of our friends. As the years went on my brother eventually quit the school, because he did not care for the school. Then both of my friends quit as well. I ended up going to class by myself. Not only would I have to walk or bike to the Dojo by myself, but I also had to do the
