At the time of Ulysses S. Grant's election to the presidency, white supremacists were conducting a reign of terror throughout the South. In outright defiance of the Republican-led federal government, Southern Democrats formed organizations that violently intimidated blacks and Republicans who tried to win political power. The most prominent of these, the Ku Klux Klan, was formed in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1865. Originally founded as a social club for former Confederate soldiers, the Klan evolved into a terrorist organization. It would be responsible for thousands of deaths, and would help to weaken the political power of Southern blacks and Republicans.

Mia Wan AP English III Eichen 2/4/14 Why the US Should Not Join the Great War In the early 1900's, Europe went into a great war due to the MAIN causes of militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. The United States managed to stay out of the war and remained neutral for three years all the while selling weaponry to both sides of the war. But with the sinking of the RMS Lusitania and the interception of the Zimmerman Telegram, the American public began calling for war. Articles such as “Draw the Sword of Liberty” evoked a sense of anger and called for the US government to declare war on Germany. Finally, on April 6, 1917, Congress approved the declaration of war.

After some debate, the German senior command agreed on a thrust deep into Russian lines out of East Prussia. The resulting "winter war" inflicted another 190,000 casualties on the Russians, but petered out when the Austrian forces to the south utterly failed to dislodged the Russians. They instead suffered another embarrassing defeat, and even lost control of Dukla Pass, a prime route onto the Hungarian plains. Only severe weather and their unfortunate supply situation prevented the Russians from cracking into the core of the Dual Monarchy's
Bethmann-Hollweg, German Chancellor, told England’s Foreign Secretary that Germany had no intention on military occupation of Belgium or seizing Belgian territory. (Doc L). Germany crossed over into Belgium 4 August 1914, on that same day the UK declared war on Germany. Thus, the war may have possibly been an accident because Germany’s intentions were not fulfilled. It also may be possible to argue that WWI was an accident because the Great Powers took action in order to try to avoid war.
The war between the two countries could not be contained to just them alone due to an alliance system that linked certain countries together by pledge to back each other in time of war. This caused a chain reaction forcing Russia, France, and Great Britain to go to war with Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. During this time the United States remained neutral because they believed it was a European matter and we wanted to continue trading with those nations at war. The United States became less neutral in the war and more supportive of the allies side following several events with Germany. German U-boats sank British passenger liners killing Americans.
In the conclusion of World War One the Great Powers suffered a lot of casualties. With German and Austria- Hungary ‘losing’ the War, a treaty would be created for each separately. The settlement of Germany would be the Treaty of Versailles, which would be published exactly five years after the death of Franz Ferdinand. It states the Germany has to pay thirty three billion dollars and accept that they started the war. The Allied powers wanted to try Kaiser Wilhelm II for War crimes but were unable to as he abdicated then escaped to The Netherlands in exile.

They had stopped making the “stalemate” which means that no army was prepared to attack the other. As the ANZACS troops landed and attacked Turkey the Germans would be distracted and send help from the western front to support turkey, which meant that there were fewer soldiers guarding the western front. Therefore allowing Germany to be attacked and end the stalemate. Paragraph 2: In addition, the desire to knock Turkey out the war was another cause that led to Gallipoli. Via knocking out Turkey, a supply route to Russia was opened through the Dardanelles and into the Black sea, to supply England and Frances ally Russia.
