Instead, in what some remember as a profane, contemptuous snarl, and loudly, Gunnery Sergeant Daly demanded of his hesitant Marines: “Come on, you sons of b*****s! Do you want to live forever?” (Brady 1) This quote was perfect for reassuring the title because this quote makes you wonder: is that why they fight, because they’re cussed at and shamed into it? Was that what motivated the men of the 4th Brigade on 1918? I believe just this one quote is enough to make the title the way it is. I believe these quotes make the title because without these quotes/questions there wouldn’t be a title for this marvelous book.
AP US History 12 August 2012 Courage in The Killer Angels The book The Killer Angels, written by Michael Shaara, is about the American Civil War, but comes with a twist. Instead of using only historical facts, Michael portrays each character as he sees fit. With this said, many of the characters he chooses play major roles in the Civil War, such as Robert E. Lee, Longstreet, Grant, and Chamberlain. However, one specific section of the book strikes me as the most courage's. In the book, Chamberlain and his battalion make up the rear of the Union, and are defending the Union from any possible attacks by the Confederates.
Also, saying that he that the Navy SEALS could operate comfortably in putrid water, frigid air, or boiling sand, functioning entirely in the underbelly of the real world, is another use of hyperbole, (Durant, P.157). He says they are comfortable in these environments, though they can survive and are trained to do so in these environments, they are not comfortable in them. He basically exaggerates here to describe the toughness of the Navy SEALS. Durant also uses sarcasm and situational irony to create humor within very serious topics. For example, he says, that he is much safer in captivity, rather than on the streets, where the people of Somalia were searching for him and any survivors of the second
This can be accomplished in many ways. Marines have dispensed blood, sweat, and tears on many battlefields abroad. They have also made a rite of passage through either Paris Island or San Diego Recruit Depots to earn the coveted title “Marine”. Marines make sacrifices for an institution and country that appreciates their devotion, not for a paycheck. Granted, most Marines are unselfishly devoted to their service, but the mere acknowledgement of a Marine’s efforts can pay the institution itself countless dividends.
Over the past eight decades American views on war have varied. After WWI and WWII the soldiers were hailed as heroes and the country rallied around the war efforts. The Vietnam War was an entirely different story, the country was at odds with the the United States involvement and therefore did not show the same level of support for the soldiers. Affield and Pyle aide readers as they strive to understand the relationship between America and Vietnam. Affield’s memoir illustrated the very real and raw aspects of war.
The plot focuses on a group of soldiers who are charged with cowardice. No man is perfect, but war magnifies qualities such as honour and deceit, and this film illustrates this phenomena in a very clean, proper way. Paths Of Glory does not show actual combat very much, unlike Full Metal Jacket. Full Metal Jacket is a study of what becomes of a soldier at war. Set in the Vietnam War, it begins with a focus on the training of a platoon of U.S. marines and continues to follow the service of Private Joker in his experiences in Vietnam as he goes about his service.
That is not an easy thing to especially if you have a girlfriend, wife, or kids. That is where the determination comes in as a big part. Many have given their lives for our country and they have done it with no hesitation. I really think they don’t get the credit they deserve once they come back from seas or once they are retired. They do get a bunch of respect though.
At the time the don’t ask don’t tell policy was in effect, but soldiers were still being discharged. In conclusion, I am glad that the policy got repealed and I give a lot of credit to President Obama for keeping his word during his campaign to end the don’t ask don’t tell policy. There are still credits who oppose lifting the ban, but it was the right thing to do. As long as your sexuality do not interfere with your work, I do not see why you would be banned from doing your job. Finally I want to say, God bless our men and women who proudly serve our country with such dignity and professionalism.
NonCommissioned Officers are the backbone of the Marine Corps. Each leader is vastly different from the other. Some Marines enjoy being a corporal only because of the increase in rank and pay. A few become the tactless leaders junior Marines try to avoid. Fortunately, many others mature into Marines who strive to become the leader that other Marines wish to emulate.
Deep down inside all should show deep respect for the opposite team, because we are all doing the same thing. This is protecting our country from the outsiders who doesn’t like our beliefs and mainly our freedom. Also another way of looking at it is one branch couldn’t work without the other. There are some differences and similarities between the two. While the Army is getting all the new tools and equipment, it seems as if the Marines are getting the job done with all the hand me downs from the different branches.
