First to Fight Viktor G. Krulak The book first to fight by Lieutenant General Viktor Krulak is split into seven different sections summarizing the development of the Marine Corps into what it is today. He speaks not only of the developments that made the Marine Corps one of the greatest fighting forces in the world but also of his personally experiences. General Krulak also speaks on the conflicts between high ranking officials in the military in a manner that most marines do not see because the conversations are held behind closed doors. This book gives a different outlook on the history of the Marine Corps and what we had to do to get where we are today. He speaks about how marines had to struggle to find a way to carry out bombing runs in inclement weather as well as night time bombings with pin point accuracy. He also speaks about Inchon at which time the Marine Corps was severly scaled down, but it mushroomed up to put together the 5th Marine Regiment and the Marine Aircraft Group. Which as we all know went on to win the battle of Inchon through its ability to adapt and overcome even the most trying of circumstances. Section 4 speaks of the “frugality” and the “inventive requisitioning” of marines. He speaks of how marines make due with much less than the other services due to the lack of funds compared to them. Marines are famous for their ability to take a small amount and make it last. General Krulak also speaks of marine’s ability to seize enemy positions through our ability to quickly think on our feet. The ability to quickly develop a new plan of action if the other one falls through. Krulak has opened my eyes to parts of our illustrious Marine Corps history that other wise I feel that I would have never known about. Through it ive come to respect the marines of the past even more because the Marine Corps as I know it today is built on their blood, sweat, and tears. The fact that on numerous occasions the people have wanted to integrate us with the other services but we continued to set ourselves apart in such a way we showed the nation that the needed us.
