One of the many great things to find out when going into this profession is that the options are narrowed but are very vast and gives one the option to go further in this field. The last semester of the last year in high school, I enrolled myself into a co-op program to explore my future dream job. I was given the opportunity to work at a dental office by the name of Dentistry at Vitality. Throughout the four months working at the office, I’ve gained lots of experience and learned a lot. The co-op experience helped in exploring this field and seeing how it is in the real world.
They offer many different programs but focus on communication, employment, health and the general well-being of immigrants and refugees. They offer classes such as English classes for Adults, Job Search, Employment Training, Refugee Resettlement, Immigration Application Preparation and Photos, Mental Health Services, Elderly Services, Counseling & Social Work. After arriving their first few months can be a bit chaotic, as the institute works to address their basic needs; assisting them with food, housing, clothing, transportation, interpretation, medical access and general orientation. Participating in a three week Orientation Program, they tend to quickly adapt due to their previous horrific living situations they survived. Great thanks to places like the Institute for Family Medicine and Barnes Jewish Hospital for offering to help provide immunizations to these new arrivals.
I am up at 4 AM every day to take care of my family. I made the food, did the laundry, helped my children to go to school, etc. After that, I had to come to each house, knocked their doors, talked with them as friendly as a woman can, in order to persuade them that women had enough ability to be given the right to vote. Today, I met with the mayor of our city to discuss about why they should give women the right to vote. I showed him the paper that I asked people to sign in if they agree with my viewpoint.
To surprise Elizabeth Luke hired a chief for her and his anniversary; he was supposed to be the best in town! A couple weeks later they went on a trip to the mountains and found tons of items for their home and what do you know the same chief that cooked for them for their anniversary had a restaurant in the mountains, so they ate at his restaurant and it tasted just as good as the first time they had it! 8 years later Luke had to get major surgery on his back because he had been having back problems for years, he was terrified he had never had surgery in his life. Couple days later, the doctor had to check on him to make sure everything was going well, and thankfully everything went well in surgery and he was fine. Steve talked about wanting to open his own restaurant, understanding the business from working in one of his favorite restaurants in San Diego which he got after finishing culinary arts school, He started Chipotle to back his restaurant Idea that he wanted to open. As he saw that Chipotle was taking off, he opened 3 more Chipotle’s throughout 1995. If when I saw my burrito shop taking off like this I would have turned it in to the restaurant instead of opening more small Chipotle he could of invested into one more but as a restaurant style, where he could of built it as a chain from there.
In this family, there are many “bread givers”. Sara becomes the first bread giver when she supports the family with the selling of fish. Her mother then also helps when she rents out the apartment. The three main bread givers for the Smolinsky family are Sara’s three oldest sisters. But that changes when Reb arranges the three of their marriages and to whom they will marry.

Wang Lung achieved this goal by working hard on the land everyday and even when the family moved to the city for awhile, Wang Lung had a job all day to provide food for his family. A couple examples from my own life is that during the summer I had a full time job working as a summer intern at a law firm. I worked twenty plus hours a week. Another example is in cheerleading, I had to learn all the cheers, chats, dances, and fight songs to cheer at games. It required a lot of hard work and dedication of time and patients.
But the key words were “Almost Impossible”. I had to sit down and take the time to figure this out. I knew I could I was the one that had birthed four children, and I could single handed watch twelve kids while cooking lunch and having them wash their hands. I was on fire I knew I could do this. For several days I tried my best to come up with the idea everyone was looking for.
