Though Copland began writing his music in the mid 1920s it was in 1935 with “El Salón México” that Copland began his most productive and popular years. The piece presented a new sound that had its roots in Mexican folk music. Copland believed that through this music, he could find his way to a more popular symphonic tune. Some agree that Copland’s best works were his scores for ballets. He composed scores for a number of ballets, including two of the most popular of the time: “Agnes DeMille’s Rodeo” (1942) and Martha Graham’s “Appalachian Spring” (1944), for which he won the Pulitzer Prize.
Colbie Caillat On Aug. 21, 2012 I had went to Colbie Collibet and Gavin Degraw concert at the antelope valley fairgrounds. It was my first time seeing these two artists and they did not disappoint me at all. I love going to shows where the co-headliners or main interact with not only the audience but with each other's performance. Colbie’s voice was sweet and sensual that it makes me want my hubby to be at the show with me! Her songs make me want to fall in love and to be loved all at the same time.
When Chinese immigrants came to America they brought with them old world traditions, such as the Chinese New Year. In San Francisco Chinatown during the Cold War, ethnic leaders began trying to assimilate and become more accepted separating themselves from communist China. They attempted to accomplish this through modernization of their festival and the adoption of the model minority ideal. This was in the hopes of attracting tourists, bolstering businesses and have the Chinese themselves become part of the powerful white middle class. To further push western middle class ideals Chinese leaders implemented a beauty pageant to showcase which pushed them to be more associated with whites than other minorities.
One of the many was a composer named John Cage, who Tan became good friends with and inspired him. He was influenced to bring back the memories of the sounds in his childhood, like water and stones. He was able to blend cultures to create an unusual but unique within the great possibilities of interpretation. Tan Dunn states “My creative formula is ‘one plus one equals ones’”, when he was questioned about the philosophy on combining words and music; he believes they should be melded into an indivisible unity. Tan Dun was a big fan of Metropolitan Operas, and when Met commission were first announced in 1997, for about nine years we attended majority of the productions at the Met, and we can’t forget about the number of rehearsal he went to.
One of my favorite songs of Parliament is “Flashlight”. It is incredibly catchy, fun, and upbeat. Their fun and creative album art would have drew me in to checking them out as well. Even though it came out a few years later in 1982, their song “Atomic Dog” has always been a favorite, and was even voted as our school song in 1997. All in all, this era ushered in new and creative music genre’s and elaborate shows and costumes to match.

The city I decided to research is Koreatown. Koreatown is located in the Mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles. It has a high concentration of Korean Americans and is known for its commercial and historic buildings. It is also famous for its mid and high-rise towers. The commercial businesses are mostly Asian high fashion boutiques, nightclubs, 24 hour businesses, and restaurants.
Understandably, when the news of gold and opportunity in far away Gum San, (Golden Mountain – the Chinese name for America) reached China, many Chinese seized the opportunity to seek their fortune, and a majority ended up on the coasts of California. Rao starts her article off with a historical narrative of this musical past and how these clusters of families brought the culture from their homeland and introduced it in an authentic fashion. As we can see today, every major metropolitan city has its own version of Chinatown. The stage has drawn Chinese people closer and closer together and led to immigration in and within the US. Although the stories on stage were inspired from the older history
Immigrants from China built the Transcontinental Railroad, which brought our country together by connecting the East and West. Many have become scientists or engineers and have created numerous ideas and inventions to make our lives better. Immigration is the largest factor contributing to population growth and contributes over 2.25 million people to the U.S. population annually. (Elbel) The chart shows the U.S. has traditionally allowed relatively small numbers to immigrate, thus allowing for decades of assimilation. After the peak of about 8.7 million in the first decade of the 20th century, numbers went steadily down.
