The continued presence of the US and Russia would have thwarted the invasion by the Republic of Korea. • North Korea attacks: June 24, 1950 The North Korean attacks prompted the South Koreans to have the U.N Security Council demand the immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops which in turn prompted the U.S. to send in their military to aid the U.N. in their request. And for the first time in recent history, an organized national force fought aggression. • Truman’s response to the Korean invasion: June 25-30, 1950 Truman responded quickly to the invasion by winning UN support for international assistance to the South. On June 30, the U.S. Ordered their own ground troops into Korea; Douglas MacArthur was the general appointed by Truman. • The decision to invade North Korea The decision to intervene in Korea grew out of the tense atmosphere that characterized Cold War politics. On the eve of the North Korean invasion, a number of events had made Truman anxious. The Soviet Union exploded an atomic bomb in 1949, ending the United States' monopoly on the weapon. In Europe, Soviet intervention in Greece and Turkey had given rise to the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan, which funneled aid to war-torn Europe in the hopes of warding off communist political victories. In early 1950, President Truman directed the National Security Council (NSC) to conduct an analysis of Soviet and American military capabilities.
