“Only seeing general patterns can give us knowledge. Only seeing particular examples can give us understanding.” I agree with the assertion that only seeing general patterns can give us knowledge while only seeing particular examples can give us understanding. Knowledge is information and sills acquired through experience or education. It is the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. Understanding is a relation between the knower and an object of understanding. It is psychological process related to an abstract or physical object where one is able to think about it and use concepts to deal adequately with that object. Areas of knowledge and ways of knowing that are related to this are sense perception and language. Science and math are related to reason. History is related to language. “Only seeing general patterns can give us knowledge,” means that we can obtain knowledge by only recognizing a general trend. “Only seeing particular examples can give us understanding,” means that we do not learn from detail by only get a basic understanding from them. Math and science explain how we obtain knowledge through general patterns. Science uses general patterns to gain knowledge by utilizing inductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning is when you begin by observing and collecting data and then looking for a pattern that explain the theory you are trying to prove. Inductive reasoning indicates some degree of support for the conclusion but do not entail it. This means that they suggest truth but do not ensure it. Inductive reasoning consists of referring general principles or rules from specific facts. Inductive reasoning is considered probabilistic which means the conclusion is probable or not certain. It allows for the possibility thatthe conclusion is false even if all the other facts are true. They are either strong or weak which describes how probable it is
