Knowing Your Audience
On August 5, 2010 San José mine suffered a catastrophe involving 33 of their miners where they were trapped underground for days with a limited supply of water, food and oxygen. San José mine is a mining company located in Northern Chile. It is owned and operated by Minera San Esteban Primera. Rescuers were rushed to the scene drilling holes in an attempt to save the miners. A second cave in was reported suspending rescuers from working for several of hours. Miners were trapped around 2,300 feet below the surface. This tragedy left the miners families worrying about their survival.
Chile’s president Sebastián Piñera promised a thorough investigation for this accident. This would assure the family members of the miners that the president of Chile would do what it can to see if the company was safe. San José mine closed in March of 2007 due to another fatal accident in that year in January. It reopened its doors a year later. This mining company does not seem to be safe. Mining can be a dangerous job to do.
According to The Guardian “The first 17 days were the worst – before a probe from the surface punched through to their cavern, as the miners prepared for a lonely, drawn-out death by starvation.” Everyone thought that all the miners had not survived this catastrophe. Luckily through a small hole the miners were able to send a message letting the rescuers know that they indeed are alive. This changed everything this sent a message to the family members and the people of Chile that the miners are alive and there is a chance that they will be rescued. According to the article Rescuer Lowered to Trapped Chilean Miners “A rescuer in a missile-like escape capsule was lowered down a nearly half-mile tunnel in the Chilean desert Tuesday night to bring 33 miners to fresh air and freedom after 69 days -- the longest anyone has ever been trapped underground and survived.” It must have been hard...
