English 10H Passages of Interest Chap 12, page 157 Context: Baba has just been diagnosed with lung cancer and refused chemo treatment. Baba and Amir are walking to the car and Amir challenges Baba’s decision on refusing treatment. “ “You’re twenty-two years old, Amir! A grown man! You …” He opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again, reconsidered. Above us, rain drummed on the canvas awning. “What’s going to happen to you, you say? All those years, that’s what I was trying to teach you, how to never have to ask that question.” He opened the door. Turned back to me. “And one more thing. No one finds out about this, you hear me? No one. I don’t want anybody’s sympathy.” Then he disappeared into the dim lobby. He chain-smoked the rest of that day in front of the TV. I didn’t know what or whom he was defying. Me? Dr. Amani? Or maybe the God he had never believed in. “ In this passage, some things are revealed about Baba, and some things are revisited. The reader learns that part of the reason Baba didn’t show much affection for Amir throughout his childhood is because he wanted Amir to grow up to be self-reliant. Also, Baba’s stubbornness is clearly shown in two examples in the passage. The first is when he demands that Amir tells no one about his condition. The second is exemplified when Baba chain-smokes in front of the television the rest of the day, despite the circumstances of his condition. Amir then silently questions whom Baba’s defiance is targeting. This passage is quite important to the plot of the story because it reveals some things that the reader may have been wondering about Amir’s childhood and Baba’s parenting. It also reveals what may be to come for Baba, as well as for Amir. For his whole life, Amir has wondered why Baba wouldn’t accept him for who he is. In this passage, his question may have been partly answered in that Baba
