Breeze Wanaisie Writing 122 Kathleen Horton 2/19/13 The friendliest opposing voice Racism has been around for probably all of time. In our history there have been many ways, effective and not, to address this issue and to abolish it. King and Obama are two people that have attempted to do this. Although King and obama both are persuasive, king is more so because he writes in a friendly voice, which is more effective. The general tone of kings voice is shown threw out his entire letter. The words he uses in this letter give a tone that is friendly and understanding. His voice is kind and very effective in the way he describes his personal experience, how he identifies with the clergymen, and in describing the laws. Even when he is pointing out the negative of the opposing view his tone is friendly. He refers to God a lot, which a majority of people can relate to, and is thought of as a peaceful character. At the beginning of his letter King writes “Since I feel that you are men of genuine good will” (341) when addressing the clergymen. This shows a friendly voice and approach that sets a calming tone. To come to an understanding and to stir action on a subject it is important to be friendly, to understand where they are coming from, to instill empathy, and to work towards a common goal. Doing all this with a calm voice is most effective. King brought a great awareness to the problem and a light for the future. To continue on we should address the issue bold and strong like King did but also in the friendly manner in which he set his voice. To yell and point fingers and call names will get us nowhere.
