Kankakee County is a fun-filled place just south of Chicago and Cook County. It is hard to find an activity that won’t match anyone’s hobbies. A tradition here are barn quilts. Barns throughout the county have a quilt pattern on their barn. The barns have them to be proud of the agricultural heritage. Kankakee County offers a wide variety cultural, recreational and entertaining fun for people of all ages and interests. Kankakee County has many diverse cultures throughout the area and is shown through festivals, food, museums, and churches. The county has many museums of various historical specifications. The restaurants in Kankakee County are like no other with a wide selection of family-owned restaurant to choose from. Mexican restaurants like Martinez Taco and Chinese restaurants such as China Chef have the perfect meals to fill anyone’s appetite. Kankakee County also has many pizza places like Anthony’s Family Restaurant and Pizzeria and a steakhouse like Ad’s BBQ. Monical’s also originated in the area, which is the pizza style preferred by many born residents of Kankakee County. The festivals in Kankakee County are a joyous time for people to hang out and have fun. One of the biggest is the Bourbonnais Friendship Festival. Held on father’s day week in late June, the Friendship Festival offers rides, foods, contests, games, and fun for all. Other festivals include the Strawberry Jazz Festival, a fun event filled with display, handmade crafts, food stations, and is help to celebrate the start of the summer season. The Fall Art Stroll, which is at the Historic Kankakee Depot, is a celebration of fall with fine arts, food, singing and dancing. The theatres in the area are memorable and will always be remembered. The Majestic Theatre, founded in 1912, although no longer in use, was renovated and now hosts banquets and other events. The Young People’s Theatre is a great way to help children gain experience in the art of music and hold annual concerts in March and October. Another theatre is the Acting Out Theatre Company, which is a non-profit theatre that holds all of its performances outdoors at Perry Farm. The sports to watch in Kankakee are endless, including the Bears Training Camp at ONU. The Kankakee County Soldiers, an International Basketball League Team, host their games at the Hidden Cove Sportsplex. For those that enjoy racing, the Kankakee County Speedway is a great play to watch some live racing. This dirt track on the Kankakee County Fairgrounds is a great place to be on Friday nights for racing fans. Shopping is something many people just love to do to pass time. Kankakee County has many antique malls and malls that won’t be anywhere else. A popular antique shop is Castle Antique Mall which is located in Bourbonnais. Another antique mall is J&K Antiques and Collectibles, which is in Chebanse.
