He belives we now live in a consumer society rather than an industrial society. It is not an equal society and the industrial society before had not been either. He believes that the forms of inequality and freedom in a consumer society differ from what went on before. A consumer society promises choice and freedom to those who, because of their financial and social circumstances are in a position to consume effectively. In an industrial society it was really only the very wealthy who could have defined themselves as consumers and lived lives defined by a luxury lifestyle. In contemporary society there are still aristocrats, capitalists and professionals who can afford to consume to a greater degre than others but they are now joined by many others who have access, in varying degrees, to the trappings of a consumer lifestyle.
