“The Kaaba” The 1.2 billion Muslims around the world are united by their believe of the Kaaba, which means in Arabic cube. This is a ancient pre-Islamic granite temple in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Kaaba is actually located inside Grand Mosque in Mecca, which is the holiest in the Islamic religion. Even though the Kaaba is the symbol of Islam and is holly, it is not worshiped as an entity itself any more than a church or synagogue. One of the most important is their believe as house of Allah, and is considered the focal point for Islamic prayer and worship. When Muslims face Mecca for prayer r, it is towards the Kaaba that they are actually facing. According to Islamic tradition, the first Kaaba was built by Adam,and is supposedly a replica of the House of God in heaven directly above. It is traditionally believed that the Kaaba was rebuilt by Abraham and his son Ishmael, from whom Mohammad (PBUH) is believed to have descended, however the relationship between the Kaaba and Abraham has been refuted by modern scholars. The Kaaba and purified of Arabic idols and gods and rededicated to Allah by Mohammed (PBUH) when he returned from Medina to reclaim Mecca. The Kaaba is located in the center of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, where every year millions of Muslims make pilgrimage. When Muslims perform their ritual 5 times a day prays they face the Kaaba no matter where they are in the world. The Kaaba is covered with draped in black silk, as it has been since pre-Islamic times . This cover is called "kiswa" which in Arabic means the black silk cloth, there is also embroidered with gold that covers the Kaaba. They Kaaba’s cover is replaced every year. It get cleaned and the replaced yearly at the ritual cleaning of the Kaaba. The cleaning of the Kaaba is performed with great ceremony fifteen days before Ramadan by the Governor of Mecca
