Justus Everett wants to protect underground facilities -- not just for this generation, but for generations to come. “The construction industry in the Carolinas and throughout the county is an intergenerational thing -- fathers and sons and nephews and cousins,” he said. “This is something we have to do for the future.” Everett, a member of the NC 811 board of directors, is the president and co-founder of ABE Utilities, Inc. based in Raleigh, N.C. ABE Utilities, incorporated in 1979, is a small heavy civil/utilities construction company that focuses on water distribution, storm water management, wastewater conveyance, heavy structural concrete and the foundation shoring associated with these areas. Common Ground Alliance has become a national model for what the best practices are for one call centers in the United States, according to Everett, and he believes that is what is desperately needed so that “everybody’s not off on different tangents.” The Common Ground Alliance’s Best Practices Committee developed a Best Practices Guide based on the work of the “Common Ground Task Force.” The guide includes a restatement of the best practices listed in the Common Ground Study, practice statements with supporting description and all new practices published at least three months prior. In order for North Carolina to successfully work to improve their damage prevention laws, Everett said everyone has to work together. Laws have to define accountability in order to see a dramatic change in damage prevention, he said.
