Alaska is a wonderful state. Its capital, Juneau, is just the same. It is full of beauty, history, and activities that you won’t be able to experience anywhere else in the world. With all the activities and sights the city has to offer, you’ll never run out of things to do or see. Juneau has a unique location. The city is 900 air miles north of Seattle and 600 air miles southeast of Anchorage and inaccessible by automobile, only by air or sea. It is located on the Gastineau Channel in the panhandle of the U.S. state of Alaska. Downtown Juneau sits at sea level with the coordinates of 58°26'40''N 134°13'47''W. One can go to one of the many museums available. The most popular include the Alaska State Museum, Juneau-Douglas City Museum, and the Last Chance Mining Museum. Skiing is another big form of entertainment. Local ski resorts in the area are Mount Roberts Tramway, Alaska Powder Descent, and the Eaglecrest Ski Area. Hiking is quite popular, too. Some hiking terrains that are favored by tourist include the Perseverance, Mt. Juneau, Mt. Jumbo, Granite Creek, Mountain Roberts, and the Airport Dike Trail. Juneau is currently having some issues with roads. Environmental protection concerns, steep slopes, cold weather, and avalanche hazards are some factors that make road construction and maintenance difficult and very costly. Another issue is the unemployment rate in the city which remains below the national average with the city's being 7.1 % and the nation being at 7.9 %. Some interesting facts about Juneau include; Juneau is the only U.S. state capital to border with another country. The area of Juneau is larger than that of Delaware and Rhode Island and almost as big as the two combined. Juneau is where three of the largest gold digs in the world took place where 150 million dollars in gold was mined. It is also home to 280 species of birds, all five species of salmon, brown and black bears, and three species of whales. Juneau is a wonderful city all around.
