Walter Chandler Mrs. Mashburn English 2 Honors 3 February 2014 Julius Caesar Characterization Essay Marc Antony played a very important role in the play Julius Caesar. He had many qualities. He was very sharp and wise, he also was very loyal to Julius Caesar. Antony also shows that he loves life. . He and Caesar were very good friends and Marc Antony was heartbroken when he found out that Caesar was killed. Being sharp and persuasive was one of Antony’s traits. “He hath brought many captives home to Rome, whose ransoms did the general coffers fill: Did this in Caesar seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept: Ambition should be made of sterner stuff: Yet Brutus says he was ambitious; And Brutus is an honourable man. You all did see that on the Lupercal, I thrice presented him a kingly crown, which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?” (Jul.3.2.l.1632-1641).This quotes shows one that Antony was very smart and persuasive when he gave his speech to the commoners with Caesar’s body next to him. From Antony being so persuasive Rome’s people were starting to turn against the conspirators for killing Caesar. Antony was very cunning for putting himself in that position by asking Brutus to speak because he wanted to do so he could change the minds of the Romans. Antony had very good relationship with Caesar. At the same time Antony was very loyal to Caesar. Antony portrayed being loyal to Caesar many times throughout the play. “That I did love thee, Caesar, O, 'tis true: If then thy spirit look upon us now, shall it not grieve thee dearer han thy death, To see thy thy Anthony making his peace.” (Jul.3.1.l.1416-1419). In this quote Antony shows how he loves Caesar and that he hopes that Caesar’s spirit sees that he was loyal to him even when he was head.
