Failure to do so results in their immune system producing antibodies which attacks the lining of their bowel causing them to have abdominal pains, constipation/diarrhoea, bloating, difficulty in gaining weight in childhood or maintaining weight in adulthood and anaemia. Because it affects the way their body can absorb nutrients it can also lead to osteoporosis and increase their risk of bowel cancer. Some foods can be bought that are labelled ‘gluten free’ but tend to be more expensive. • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the term used to describe a condition when on inspection of the bowel everything seems normal, but the person suffers with symptoms like abdominal pain, flatulence, bloating and constipation/diarrhoea. The person may want to keep a food diary to help discover which foods make their condition worse and avoid them in the future.
Often just knowing that we are thirsty as opposed to hungry will lead to a better choice being made in selecting drink over food. As cognitive function deteriorates in the dementia patient these decisions are obviously effected more so. In the extreme a dementia patient will not realise that they are dehydrated or that they are hungry and will go without food and drink for longer periods then perhaps is healthy unless they are prompted by their carers to receive nutrition This factor must also be balanced against the fact that older, sentient, people often need less food and drink then younger more active people and a good carer will also be conscious of this Dementia can effect the choices that a person makes on the type of food they want to eat. For example we have a lady called Joyce who prefers foods (and drinks) that are white. (She also prefers her chair to be white so you can see the level of dementia being dealt with here).
This assignment will evaluate the importance of homeostasis in maintaining a healthy functioning of the body. If homeostasis did not work properly in the body then there are many problems that could arise. Diabetes is one of those problems: Diabetes Diabetes is “a permanent change in your internal chemistry that results having too much glucose in your blood” because the body cannot use it properly. (Rudy, 1999, Page 10) Glucose comes from digesting carbohydrates and is also produced by the liver, carbohydrate comes from many different kinds of foods and drink, such as Wholegrain cereals such as Weetabix and Shredded Wheat, Brown rice, Pasta and Potatoes. “Diabetes can be tackled in different ways- by insulin and diet” (Rudy, 1999, page 19) Diet, when someone had diabetes it is best for their health to cut right down on the unhealthy foods, and stick to the health foods, this is due to the effectiveness of the medication you are on.
Although the HCG and the Cabbage Soup diets take different approaches to weight reduction, each employ extreme measures for dangerously rapid weight loss. In comparing the low calorie intake of both diets, this will include some of the foods each diet allows, the fact that both guarantee extreme weight loss in a set short amount of time, and how each method is administered. Also the cost of the diet plans, the possible side effects& drawbacks, and the length of each plan. First, where did these diets come from? Although it is thought by many to be one of the newer fad diets, the HCG diet was developed in the 1940s by an Endocrinologist named Dr. Simeons.
Many people believe that all you really have to do is exercise in order to burn off the calories that have been consumed throughout the day. However, it’s not that simple since there are other factors to consider. These foods that these children eat are not healthy and don’t have the nutrients that are needed for growing kids. Trying to exercise the calories away won’t do much since they already have a poor diet. They increase their levels of sugar, sodium and fats.
Keeping track of what foods are consumed and in what quantities is the first step to eating healthy. When a person overloads his or her plate with a lot of food and eats until the stomach will not take anymore that person is creating dangerous health problems for themselves. In order to avoid this, people should keep track of how many times or servings they have eaten. Also, eating foods that contain low calories and are rich in nutrients can give the person a good waistline to show off. Eating more vegetables and fruits and less junk food are a really good source of vitamins that the body needs in order to maintain a healthy diet (O’Connor, 2008).
This means that they need different types of nutrition’s. For example since their metabolism tend to burn the food faster they need some type of heavy food but not too heavy so soon their metabolism won’t be able to break it down; which will cause them to gain weight. Pollan does point out in his book how fast food is not very healthy and how it is a poor quality of food. I am here to correct what he said towards fast food. Fast food can be good for you if you eat the fast food correctly.
With behavioral modification it is important to have a goal that is measurable, attainable, positive change, and something the person desires. I wish to change my eating habits and prevent stress-eating. Dieting can be stressful attempt at controlling weight, but often times do not show lasting results (Papies & Petra, 2010, p. 384). “Although restrained eaters are generally very concerned with their weight and motivated to control it by restricting their food intake, they are not very successful in these attempts, and their eating behavior is characterized by periods of food restriction as well as by repeated lapses of restraint” (Papies & Petra, 2010, p. 384). Studies have shown that restricted eaters have stronger urges to indulge in appealing food and are more likely to over eat these foods compared to nonrestricted eaters (Papies & Petra, 2010, 384).
We need to make these sugary drinks not so easy to buy. Everyday the soda companies come out with some new drink to suck us in to buying them and getting us hooked. Pepsi and coke are famous for this, but we still feel the need to try the drinks that come out. Even though most of us know that these drinks we consume are bad for us. In conclusion I believe having a tax that increases the prices on sugary drinks is a good place to start for the obesity epidemic.
