Journal 11- examine the degree to which traditional gender roles and expectations have changed in your culture over the last 30 years. The traditional gender roles and expectations in Hong Kong over the last thirty years have changed a lot. 30 years ago, women in Hong Kong were with lower social status and had little power; they were assummed to be weaker and more passive; whereas men had higher status and power; they were supposed to be stronger and more assertive. However, as the society evolves and people’s expectation towards gender changes, gender distinctions between men and women are no longer that large. Women nowadays can work in labour intensive career, fix machines, or do whatever only men could do back in 30 years. As for the men, they can also babysit, prepare for food or do housework which were mainly done by women 30 years ago. From those we can see that the gender roles and expectations in Hong Kong has changed enormously over 30 years. Moreover, the gender role and expectations for people who are homosexual is changing too. Back in 30 years ago, people were more conservative; homosexual issue was a taboo for most of the people and the whole society in Hong Kong because the gender role for them were blur. However, since Hong Kong people are becoming more open-minded nowadays, they are more willing to talk about homosexual issue. They start to accept that homosexual people are just the same as everyone. The only difference is they are interested in the same gender instead of the opposite gender. The gender role for them can be whatever they want
