Joseph McCarthy Joseph McCarthy was an American politician from Wisconsin, who served as a Republican United States Senator. He was born in Appleton, Wisconsin in November of 1908 and was raised on a farm with eight other siblings. His parents were devout Roman Catholics. In McCarthy’s early life he was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps. He also worked as a chicken farmer, managing a grocery store, a lawyer, and most importantly, a senator. McCarthy’s first years in the Senate were not very impressive. He was a very popular speaker and well known. However, we was not so well liked by fellow Senators.
